CCR is working with community partners to prepare for the scheduled implementation of the new Ontario Autism Program in April 2020. Since changes were made to OAP last year we have experienced a significant reduction in our team and capacity.

While the government’s Fall Economic Statement last week confirmed the funding they have been promising, and the recent Provincial Advisory Panel Report acknowledged the unique needs of the North, until Minister Smith provides further direction, we must do everything we can to ensure we retain qualified professionals in our communities.

We will continue to meet with parent advocacy groups, education, health, and the private sector to discuss the goal of establishing a collaborative approach to service provision and staff recruitment, retention and capacity building.

To that end, we are pleased to announce a formal collaboration with FIREFLY. Effective immediately CCR and FIREFLY will come together to deliver OAP services to the children currently in service but we will also work together to establish recruitment and capacity building processes to ensure skilled therapists are available throughout the Kenora Rainy River district when the new OAP is launched in April 2020.

CCR and FIREFLY look forward to working with our families in the North over the next several months and we welcome your feedback. Let’s continue to come together to create a system of service and supports that ensures that all families have access, choice, and confidence in the professionals available in their home community.

On behalf of the Board and team thank you for working with us, for your honest feedback, and for coming together to prepare for the future of autism services. Further updates about our progress in all areas of the region will be provided as they are finalized. We are committed to proactively communicating with you as we wait for further direction from Minister Smith on how to proceed.

With respect and gratitude,
