This service supports caregivers in teaching children and youth self-help and independent living skills. Through two caregiver workshops and four follow-up consultation sessions, caregivers learn practical Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) strategies, identify a meaningful skill to teach, and receive coaching as they put their teaching plan into practice.
Workshop 1: Teaching Self-Help Skills Using ABA Strategies
The first workshop introduces caregivers to ABA-based teaching strategies that can be used to build self-help skills. Caregivers learn how to break a skill into smaller steps, provide prompts and reinforcement, and support their child or youth in becoming more independent with daily routines.
Workshop 2: Developing an Individualized Teaching Plan
In the second workshop, caregivers choose a self-help skill that is important for their child or youth and develop a structured plan to teach it. The plan includes the steps of the skill, teaching strategies, prompts, reinforcement, and ways to track progress.
Consultation Sessions
The four consultation sessions provide individualized coaching and support as caregivers practise teaching the selected self-help skill. During these sessions, caregivers can review progress, problem-solve barriers, adjust the teaching plan, and build confidence using ABA strategies in everyday routines.
