Toileting is an essential milestone for all individuals to acquire as this skill is a steppingstone to the development of other skills. This workshop aims to support parents and caregivers of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to teach toileting skills; the workshop includes teaching:

Following a brief assessment of communication skills using the ABLLS-R, your child will be provided with a 45-minute individualized programming session (1-2 times a week) targeting 2 communication goals. Teaching strategies will be based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). A total of 10 sessions will be offered per child, including the brief assessment.

Sessions can be either child-direct or caregiver coaching (if done virtually).

This small group learning opportunity focuses on learning about relationships and sexual health and well-being with a respectful and caring facilitator. Topics include: Introduction, relationships, communication, exploitation, understanding the body and resources and review.

Benefits
Learners continue to build their understanding of factors that support positive, healthy choices, including building a deeper understanding and appreciation of themselves and their identity. Learners are also exploring healthy ways to engage in evolving and new relationships.

Description
Week 1 (Introduction) The learner will actively participate in activities designed to establish a safe, comfortable learning situation for the study of social skills and sexuality.

Week 2 (Relationships) The learner will be able to identify and describe different types of relationships (self, family, friend, date, helper, acquaintance, stranger) and identify social skills and behaviours that appropriately accompany each type of relationship.

Week 3 (Communication) The learner will develop functional, appropriate, assertive communication and decision-making skills in the following areas: non-verbal communication, making requests and refusals and handling rejection.

Week 4 (Exploitation) The learner will be able to recognize exploitation and exploitive situations including sexual abuse and exploitation and will be able to respond appropriately and effectively.

Week 5 (Understanding the Body) The learner will develop a functional understanding of human anatomy, body and feeling changes of puberty and sexual health and hygiene.

Week 6 (Resources & Review) The learner will be able to identify and access available resources for further learning and discussion of social skills and sexuality related topics, and will be able to identify interest areas for future study.

This workshop aims discuss strategies on reducing transition related problem behaviours. We will review guidelines for deciding when the advance notice is viable with the aim of reducing problem behaviors as a whole.

Nothing seems to work! Understanding, Preventing and Responding to Challenging Behaviour. This workshop will review how to establish positive rapport, examine the functions of behaviour, and discuss strategies to prevent and deescalate challenging

Communication is an ongoing, evolving part of parenting a child with ASD. This workshop stresses the importance of functional communication and introduces naturalistic communication strategies that can easily be incorporated into everyday family routines. The facilitator will assist caregivers to identify a developmentally appropriate communication goal.

Caregivers who attend this workshop are eligible for a follow-up, remote consultation (via ZOOM).

Children and youth with ASD experiencing anxiety are not alone! During this 3-hour training caregivers will learn about anxiety, the various ways it presents in children/youth with ASD and what Cognitive and Behaviour Therapy strategies to use with their child/youth at home. Caregivers will practice strategies and develop a plan to support their child/youth with a specific goal. Two one-hour individualized follow-up consultations are provided following the training.
