Vocational Skills Group

A skill teaching 3-group format followed by one to one individual sessions covering the topics of searching for a job; intro to job banks, community resources, skill identification, writing a resume and applying for a job as well as preparing for and conducting a job interview.

Cooking Skills Group

Social Skills Group

This social skills group for 11-14 years old will cover off teaching topics such as:

o Conversation Skills – initiating, maintaining, and exiting a conversation
o Friendship and Relationship Skills – finding common interests, qualities of a good friend
o Emotions/Self-Regulation – identifying and expressing basic emotions, coping strategies
o Body Language – awareness of own body language and how to ready the body language of others

PEERS®

PEERS® (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills) is a 14-week evidence-based social training for motivated teens on the Autism Spectrum, in grades 7 to 12, who are interested in learning ways to help them make and keep friends. During each group session, teens are taught important social skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills in session during activities (e.g. playing sports, board games, etc.)
Parents are taught how to assist their teens in making and keeping friends by provided feedback through coaching during weekly socialization homework assignments.

Make & Take – Visual Aids

The visuals workshop will take participants through an exploration of visuals to support with the organization of an environment, to give information, to reduce problematic behaviours, to promote independence, and to improve transitions between environments. The workshop will consist of a 1 hour presentation on visual supports, followed by a 1.5 hours make & take session. Bilingual facilitators available.

ROOTS & WINGS PSYCHOLOGY

Anxiety in Children and Youth with ASD: Caregiver CBT Workshop with Individualized Follow-up

Children and youth with ASD experiencing anxiety are not alone! During a 3-hour training caregivers will learn about anxiety, the various ways it presents in children/youth with ASD and what Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy strategies to use with their child/youth at home. Caregivers will practice strategies and develop a plan to support their child/youth with a specific goal. Two one-hour individualized follow-up consultations (in home or by phone) are provided following the training.

Sharing Hope: A Group Caregivers Having Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

For caregivers who received a recent or past diagnosis of ASD for their child. Caregivers will connect and share their experiences, while finding new strengths, problem solving and coping strategies to move forward feeling more empowered with hope for the future.

Consultation Clinics for Caregivers

Caregivers can receive professional consultation to assist them in prioritizing goals for their child/youth and understanding what evidence based approaches would be appropriate to meet the goals. A one-hour individualized appointment with a BCBA, Psychologist, or Psychologist Associate experienced in ASD will be scheduled. Both English and French families are welcome and will receive the consultation in their language of choice in person or by phone.

Introduction to ABA Therapist Role

The first of a series, ABA training focuses on teaching new therapists or parents to establish rapport and gain instructional control to promote learning readiness with a child. Two follow-up in person coaching sessions of one hour are offered to support implementation. Intermediate/Advanced level therapist training available in future. Supervision for service delivery or RBT/BCaBA credential may be available post training. Available in French and English.

Foundational Skills Workshop

Learning strategies and behavioural principles to build positive interactions with children and youth who have ASD. This half-day workshop is for parents, caregivers and professionals who are aiming to develop and sustain positive interactions with children and youth with ASD. Parent/professional scenarios will be shared and discussed, specifically how behavioural strategies can support a improve situations in a learner’s environment.

BEHAVIOUR ANALYSIS NORTH

Intensive Toilet Training

Toilet training is offered within the home for a maximum two-week period. The intensive toilet training procedure is an ‘in the bathroom’ method that required significant commitment from the family as the treatment continues following the intervention by the therapist.
Eligibility

Prerequisite skills to intensive toilet training include:

1) remaining dry for a minimum 90 minute period
2) pulling down and pulling up loose fitting pants

Benefits

o Increased independence for the child
o Supports the increase of confidence and self-esteem
o Supports the development of other healthy habits such as hand washing
o Increases social opportunities for children such as joining daycare, beginning kindergarden, etc.

Play Groups

Children participating in our Playgroups will have the opportunity to engage in fun activities with same aged peers. The Playgroups are designed to teach play skills, emotional regulation skills, promote social communication, promote independence and develop friendships using a fun and stimulating environment.
The possible benefits for children participating are:

o Having an inclusive and supported environment for social interaction with same aged peers
o Access to new and fun activities (expanding current repertoires)
o Providing an environment where children can acquire new skills (e.g. language skills, play skills, emotional-regulation skills, etc.)
o Preparing children to become ready for the formal learning environment

SURREY PLACE

Behavioural Services

The Clinic Week option allows families, together with their local treatment team (if applicable), to work across 4 consecutive mornings or afternoons in collaboration with a Surrey Place clinical team, composed of a BCBA and Therapist. The goal of the clinic week is to complete a preliminary curriculum assessment of the child’s areas of strength and need and help the family identify immediate goals. The first clinic day consists of the BCBA and Therapist meeting the family, client, and members of the local team to gather relevant history, conduct observations, and plan the assessment. During the second and third clinic days, the Therapist will work with the client, family, and local team to conduct the needs assessment. During the fourth day, the BCBA and Therapist will again meet with the family, client, and local team (if applicable), to review observations from the week and written recommendations. A telephone call within 2 weeks is available to follow-up on questions that may have arisen from the recommendations. Should intervention be recommended, ongoing supervision needs for implementation will be discussed. In complex cases, recommendations to identify local community supports to provide the intervention and supervision may be necessary.

Applied Behaviour Analysis for Professionals

This 36-hour course is designed to improve the effectiveness of applying ABA strategies in order to better support teachers, parents, and staff regarding the learning and behaviour of children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Course objectives: participants will demonstrate a greater understanding of ABA, feel more confident in translating their knowledge into practice, rate their ABA-related performance higher and experience acceptance and appreciation regarding their use of ABA.

Sexuality Group

A socio-sexual program for adolescents (ages 12 to 18) with ASD. Based on Dr. Isabelle Héneault’s 12-week relationship and sexual education program. The goal of the intervention is to provide a structure for appropriate behaviour and offer opportunities for learning. Pre and post measures will support the long-term goal in supporting participants to experience social integration, healthy sexuality and access to enriching quality of life.
Parents will be encouraged to participate in the Sexuality Workshop and two parent sessions to better support their teens learning.
One follow up sessions approx.. one to two weeks after completing group sessions.
